Izembek National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to the smallest as well as one of the most ecologically unique National Wildlife Refuges in the State of Alaska, the Izembek National Wildlife.
Refuge Refuge History: The lands of Izembek National Wildlife Refuge were not located far from the Bering Land Bridge. Archeologists have discovered numerous kitchen middens suggesting a large population in the area over 9,000 years ago. In the early 19th Century explorers on board Russian ships entered the region. In 1827 a man named Count Feodor Lutke named Izembek Lagoon in honor of Karl Izembek, a doctor on board his ship. During World War II there was a growing military presence by both U.S. and Japanese troops in the Aleutian islands. Fort Randall and other military installations were established.
Wildlife: Izembek National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including geese, ducks, golden eagles, bald eagles, hawks, peregrine falcons, sandpipers, brown bears, caribou, foxes, and sea otters. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts awesome fishing, beautiful scenery, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
