Klondike Goldrush National Historic Park
It all began in August 1896 when three men, George Washington Carmack, Dawson Charlie, and Jim Mason discovered gold in the region that would launch the great Klondike Goldrush the following year. Welcome to Klondike Goldrush National Historic Park. The initial path to the gold was on the Chilkoot Trail where many people met their fate via hypothermia, avalanches, malnutrition, and even murder. Once the tramways were built it became much safer to travel in the region. The gold rush attracted at least 20,000 and even as many as 30,000 people hoping to strike it rich.
Trails: Today the Chiltook Trail is still explored but only in the summertime when it is much safer. While trekking on these 33 historic miles you encounter bears, moose, or 49 species of birds. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
