Welcome to Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, an Alaskan wilderness of forests, lakes, mountains, glacial rivers, and tundra nestled in the upper Tanana River Valley. Refuge History: Before the arrival of the first European settlers the land that is now Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge was occuped by various Native American tribes for thousands of years. Until the late 19th century the Athabascan Tribe hunted this land's game and gathered it's fruits. Some of the first known white men arrived around this time and included trappers, Russian explorers, and U.S. Army soldiers. In 1942, the 1,523 mile Alaska highway was built over a period of 7 months in temperatures as low as -40F. In 1980 Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge was established. Flora and Fauna: Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the refuge boundaries include birches, spruces, and aspens. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include grizzly bears, black bears, beavers, minks, muskrats, wolves, foxes, moose, and lynx. Please treat their home with respect. For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts awesome wildlife viewing opportunities and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
