Welcome to Alabama's majestic Bankhead National Forest located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Forest History: On January 15, 1918 Bankhead National Forest was established as the Alabama National Forest. On June 19, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt renamed it the Black Warrior National Forest. Finally in 1942, Congress changed the name to Bankhead National Forest. Wildlife: The Bankhead National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including deer, squirrels, raccoons, bobcats, rabbits, and many others. Please treat their home with respect. For the lover of the outdoors Bankhead National Forest boasts over 82 miles of multipurpose trails and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
