Prescott National Forest
Welcome to the Prescott National Forest, an oasis of over 1.2 million acres consisting of the Black Hills, Black Mesa, the headwaters of the Verde River, and the Santa Maria, Juniper, Bradshaw, and Sierra Prieta mountain ranges.
Forest History: Throughout the late 19th century the lands in this region were very heavily harvested for timber. By the time Prescott Forest Reserve was established in 1898, almost all of the old growth timber in the region was gone. The Prescott Forest Reserve became Prescott National Forest in 1908.
Flora and Fauna: Prescott National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include Sonoran Desert Vegetation in the lowlands and Ponderosa pines in the highlands. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include mountain lions, deer, black bears, squirrels, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Prescott National Forest boasts 450 miles of trails, numerous fishing streams, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
