Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve
Welcome to Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve nestled in the Berkeley and Oakland Hills.
Park History: The idea for the establishment of Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve has it's roots in the 1970's when there was growing interest in protecting the Claremont Canyon Watershed. The first 80 acres were purchased by the Park District in 1978. Long before the arrival of European settlers the land in and around Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve was occupied by various Native American tribes including the Huchiun Ohlone tribe. They were mostly hunters and gatherers who used the land to meet their needs. In 1858 a portion of the transcontinental telegraph line went through the canyon and it became the main route for horse traffic between Contra Costa County and Oakland. The opening of the Kennedy Tunnel caused a significant reduction in the canyon's traffic and the canyon was soon used for mining and agricultural purposes.
Wildlife: Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including foxes, coyotes, deer, harks, and garter snakes. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts the scenic multipurpose Stonewall-Panoramic Trail and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
