Cleveland National Forest
Welcome to Cleveland National Forest located in the mountains of southern California.
Forest History: Before the arrival of European settlers the land that is now Cleveland National Forest was occupied by various Native American tribes including the Cahuila, Cupeno, and Kumeyaay tribes. Throughout the 18th century the Spanish established many missions in the region. In 1869, the Gold Rush brought many settlers to the area and mines for zinc, silver, and lead were also dug. Throughout the late 19th century much of the forest was damaged by fires and mining and local interest in a forest reserve was growing. In 1891, despite opposition from loggers and ranchers, the Forest Reserve Act was passed and throughout the decade the Trabuco Canon and San Jacinto Forest Reserves were established by President Grover Cleveland. In 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt combined the lands from numerous forest reserves and established the Cleveland National Forest in 1908, naming it after President Cleveland.
Wildlife: The Cleveland National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including coyotes, mountain lions, squirrels, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Cleveland National Forest boasts miles of trails, numerous campgrounds, and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
