Routt National Forest
Welcome to the Routt National Forest located in the majestic Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado.
Forest History: Routt National Forest started off as the Park Range Forest Reserve which was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905. In 1908 it was upgraded to National Forest status and it's name was changed to honor Colonel John Routt who was the last territorial governor and first state governor of Colorado. Long before the arrival of European settlers numerous Native American tribes including the Utes inhabited this region. The forest's landscapes consist of mountains, rolling foothills, and high plateaus. nestled between Dinosaur National Monument to the west and Rocky Mountain National Park to the east.
Wildlife: Routt National Forest helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including black bears, rabbits, squirrels, porcupines, mountain lions, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
