Soapstone Prairie Natural Area

Welcome to Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, a grassland oasis at the foot of the Rocky Mountains near Fort Collins, Colorado.
Park History: The first human inhabitants of this region arrived over 12,000 years when the Paleoindians of the Ice Age roamed the land. Since that time numerous other Native American groups have ruled the landscape and in more recent years white settlers came and established farms and ranches here. In fact Soapstone Prairie is home to the Lindenmeier archeological site, a National Historic Landmark where the Colorado Museum of Natural History and Smithsonian Institution unearthed many artifacts of the Folsom culture in the 1930s. Today it is the most extensive Folsom culture site known to man. Scavenging of these artifacts or damaging them is punishable by Colorado State Law.
Wildlife: Soapstone Prairie Natural Area helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including elk, foxes, owls, golden eagles, and rattlesnakes. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts over 20 miles of trails and so much more. Come on out and have a blast!
