Welcome to Connecticut's Devil's Hopyard State Park.
Park History: It is not truely known how this park got it's unique name but there have been many stories as to why it was named Devil's Hopyard State Park. One of the more popular stories is that there was a man named Dibble who farmed hops on the land for beer production and that the land was originally called Dibble's Hopyard. Though there are records of numerous farmers in the region, there has never been any listing of a man named Dibble.
Another story as to how the park got it's name centers around the park's natural potholes. Though we know today how these natural formations came into existence, it was not known by past generations. One person's theory is that the devil himself walked by the waterfall one day, got his tail wet, causing him to vent his anger by burning holes in the ground.
For the lover of the outdoors Devil's Hopyard State Park boasts the 60 foot Chapman Falls, hiking trails, some of the best ranked birdwatching in Connecticut, and much more. Come on out and explore! For more information about the campsites and for reservations please call 860-526-2336.
