Welcome to New Haven's Lighthouse Point Park. This park's beautiful light house goes back well over 100 years to the mid 19th century when it was a 30 foot tall wooden light house that burned whale oil for it's lantern. Some sources indicate that the original beacon could only be seen for 5 miles and others say as far as 12 miles. In 1847, $10K in Federal money was spent to build a new lighthouse in order to meet the needs of ocean traffic. And this is the lighthouse that is still standing today, she is made of sandstone, is octagonal in shape, and is 97 feet tall. The builders were Jabez Porter and Marcus Bassett.
In 1924 the City of New Haven finally purchased the light house from the East Shore Amusement Company, and thoughout the roaring 1920's people came from miles around, including baseball players Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, to enjoy this park with it's games, ferry-boat rides, and swimming beaches. This park was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and today still boasts swimming beaches, a carousel, a boat launch, a fishing pier, and much more for local residents, visitors, and students of nearby Yale University. Come on out and have fun.
