Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge located on Florida's Atlantic coast between Wabasso Beach and Melbourne Beach.
Refuge History: Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge was first established in 1991 and named for Dr. Archie Carr, a man who worked very hard for the protection of sea turtles. This land is considered by scientists to be the most important area for the loggerhead sea turtle in the western hemisphere and the most important place for green turtle nesting on the continent of North America. One of the largest and rarest sea turtles in the world, the leatherback, can be found here as well as 25-35% of all loggerhead and green sea turtle nests in the US. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 sea turtles nest here annually. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works with the Florida State Government and surrounding beach communities to help raise awareness for the sea turtle.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts 20 miles of beaches. Come on out and have a blast!
