The beautiful Lignumvitae Key Botanical State Park helps protect one of the largest remaining tracts of Florida's hardwood hammack forests. In 1919 this island was owned by a wealthy Miami resident by the name of William J. Matheson who had a career in chemistry. What remains of his estate is now the park's visitor center. This island can only be accessed via watercraft.
