Iowa State Forests
Welcome to Iowa's largest State Forest, the great Stephens State Forest located in the south central part of the state. This forest is not one large untit but seven units scattered over 5 different counties. The forest was first established in the 1930's and named for renowned conservationist T.C. Stephens. Many of the trees were planted with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
The Lucas, Whitebreast, and Woodburn Units are located in the town of Lucas, Iowa.
The Lucas Unit has 3 campgrounds, 2 ponds, and over 5 miles of multipurpose trails. The Whitebreast Unit has 3 equestrian campground, 2 stocked ponds, and over 20 miles of multipurpose trails. The Woodburn Unit has backpacking campsites and 6 miles of hiking trails.
The Cedar Creek, Chariton, and Thousand Acres Units are undeveloped but are still popular with hunters and bird-watcherse.
And finally the Unionville Unit consists of 11 scattered parcels in northeast Appanoose and northwest Davis counties. Come out for some hunting or backcountry hiking.
