Located in the Northwestern Corner of Illinois along the border with Wisconsin, Apple River Canyon State Park offers scenic vistas of limestone bluffs carved out by the Apple River.
Park History: Before the arrival of European settlers, Native Americans roamed this land for many centuries and even mined lead in the region. These lead mines were discovered by early European explorers including Nicholas Perrot and John Law, who exploited some of the lead himself. The Black Hawk War drove most of the Native Americans out and the local town of Galena saw a big mining boom. Where the park stands now, once stood a town named Millville where two sawmills were located. Millville was located on the Galena-Chicago Stage route and prospered until the railroad came through in 1854. In 1892, a terrible flood broke a nearby dam and the flood-waters destroyed Millville. Not a trace of Millville remains today.
