Welcome to Shelbyville State Fish and Wildlife Area, a sprawling oasis of grasslands, wetlands, forests, and prairies along the banks of the Kaskaskia and West Okaw Rivers near Bethany, Illinois. Lake Shelbyville was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in order to help control flooding, supply water, and protect fish and wildlife. The lake itself is over 11,000 acres in size and boasts over 250 miles of beautiful shoreline and an average depth of 16 feet and a maximum of 67 feet.

Flora and Fauna: This preserve protects the habitat of numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the preserve's plants include sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, oaks, hickories, willows, and others. Some of the preserve's animals include rabbits, deer, foxes, squirrels, and over 200 species of bird. Please treat their home with respect.

For the lover of the outdoors this preserve is a popular fishing destination and allows for small watercraft. Come on out and have fun.
