Welcome to Cave-in-Rock State Park located in southern Illinois on the banks of the Ohio River.

Park History: Cave-In-Rock State Park was established in 1929. The limestone cave itself is 55 feet wide and was carved out by water thousands of years ago. The first European explorer known to see the cave was a Frenchman by the name of M. de Lery, who called the cave caverne dans Le Roc. The cave once served as hideouts for bandits, pirates, and other outlaws following the Revolutionary War. One of the most famous of these was a man named Samuel Mason, once an officer in General George Washington's Army. He converted the cave into a tavern and called it Cave-in-Rock. In 1929 the State purchased the first 64.5 acres and additional purchases over the years brought it to it's present size of 204 acres.

For the lover of the outdoors Cave-in-Rock State Park boasts hiking trails, 34 class A campsites, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
