Welcome to Piney Creek Ravine State Natural Area located on the Randolph-Jackson County Line near Chester.
Park History: This preserve was purchased by the State of Illinois in 1972. Though small in size, this preserve is quite unique as it's rich in vegetation and in history. Piney Creek Ravine contains the oldest known rock art in the State of Illinois with over 200 designs as old as the Late Woodland Period (500-1000 A.D) and as recent as the Mississippian (1000-1500 A.D). The petroglyphs were put into the rock by hammer and the paintings were made from a mixture of limestone and animal fat. Any attempt to vandalize or damage this art will result in Prosecution under State Law. Please treat the art with respect.
Plants and animals: Some of this preserve's plant species include a combination of northern as well as Ozarkian plants. These include ferns, oaks, sedges, moss, and smartweeds. Some of the preserve's animals include deer, raccoons, squirrels, American Toads, fence lizards, box turtles, copperheads, garter snakes, and blue racers. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts a beautiful hiking trail along the bluffs of Piney Creek. Come on out and explore.
