Blackhawk Park

Welcome to Chicago's Blackhawk Park located in the Cragin Neighborhood northwest of downtown. This park has it's roots in the early 20th century when the Northwest Park District first started to aquire the land for Blackhawk Park in 1916. In 1921, world famous architect Jens Jensen began designing a plan for the park which included a wading pool, tennis courts, a playground for the kids, and lighting. The park was named in 1923 in honor of division of the United States Army that fought in World War I. The division was named for Chief Blackhawk, who let several tribes into the Illinois region in the 19th century in an attempt to reclaim their lands. Though Chief Blackhawk ultimately failed he has long been honored for his bravery. In 1934 the Northwest Park District and many others were merged into the Chicago Park District. Today blackhawk park has a sprayground and a swimming pool for hot summer days, five tennis courts, a gymnasium, and much more. Numerous athletic programs are offered at Blackhawk Park.
