Welcome to Chicago's Dunbar Park located in the southside community of Douglas. During both World Wars the community of Douglas received many African American immigrants from the southern states. Douglas and the surrounding neighborhoods suffered badly during the Great Depression and in the years that followed many urban renewal efforts were put together. In 1962 the City of Chicago first purchased this land and built the park amenities over the next four years. The park is named for Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of the first critically acclaimed African-American authors in the United States. Some of his writings include several poetry collections, five novels, and four short story collections. Today this park named in his memory boasts tennis courts, a playground, and much more. Come out and have fun. To contact the staff or make reservations please call 312-747-5962.
