Kosciuszko Park (fondly known as "Koz") is situated along the northern
boundary of Chicago's Logan Square community. The park comprises just
over eight acres, and the western border is one block east of Pulaski
Road. Kosciuszko has long been a community center for Chicago's
Northwest Side.
Dedicated in 1916, the park is name for Polish patriot Thadeuz
Kosciuszko who came to America in 1776. Kosciuszko was awarded US
citizenship and the rank of brigadier general. He returned to Poland
and led the country's forces in an uprising against Imperial Russia
and the Kingdom of Prussia.
Koz was once home to a Polish Language School and a much frequented
branch of the Chicago Public Library. The large, historic field house
features and indoor pool, combination gymnasium, and assembly hall.
There are baseball/softball fields, football/soccer fields, a tennis
court, and an artificial turf soccer field.
Recreational programs such as baseball, basketball, football, martial
arts, soccer, softball, tumbling, conditioning, and volleyball are
available. Koz is also noted for its Special Recreation programs
(including training for the Special Olympics) and ADA accessible
facilities/playgrounds. Social clubs and aquatics programs are
available, The park provides a popular after school program for youth
and hosts family events and seasonal programs.
