Welcome to Siloam Springs State Park located near Clayton, Illinois.
Park History: The land that is now Siloam Springs State Park was originally part of a tract of land in western Illinois known as "the military tract." In 1852, Blackhawk War and Mexican War veteran George Meyer's purchased the land and held onto it for the next 30 years until his passing in 1882. After Meyers passed away, a local businessmen who had heard about the springs legendary healing power, Quincy Burgesser took an interest in the springs. He discovered that the water had a higher mineral content than the famous Waukesha and Eureka Springs. By 1884 he had constructed two spring houses, a bathing house, and the Siloam Forest Hotel, making the place a popular resort. Bottled water from Spring Number 2 was sold as far west as Kansas City and was a big business for many years.
In 1935, the Siloam Springs Recreation Club purchased the land with the intention of restoring it for the local towns. Citizens of neighboring counties helped to raise money to split the purchase price with the State of Illinois. Finally in 1940, the land was purchased, the hotel torn down, and a State Recreation Area was established. In 1955, a small 58 acre lake was created and a year later the site was dedicated as Siloam Springs State Park.
Today it is considered one of the most beautiful State Parks in Illinois. Aside from the relaxing springs this park also boasts miles of multipurpose trails, a boat ramp (electric motors only), 98 class A campsites with hookups, and a lake stocked with sunfish, carp, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and catfish. Come on out and explore.
