Sand Ridge State Forest
Welcome to Sand Ridge State Forest, an island in a sea of agriculture! Located in the heart of Illinois's corn farming region, Sand Ridge State Forest protects an oasis of sand prairies, towering pines and native oak hickories. The park is home to many species of plants an animals including a few that most associate with the southwest including the prickly pear cactus and the pocket gopher. From hunting to horseback riding to snowmobiling it provides numerous recreational activities year-round. The landscape that is now Sand Ridge State Forest was formed over 15,000 years ago during the last glacial period when the flood waters left a vast deposit of sand in the Illinois River Valley. In 1939, the state purchased over 5,000 acres of land to be used as an experimental forest. In 1971 the site became known as Sand Ridge State Forest and it includes over 2,492 acres of pine and 3,996 acres of native oak hickory. Come on out and have a blast! There are over 40 miles of trails for hiking, 50 miles for horseback riding, and 26 miles for snowmobiling. Hunters can come out and hope to get some deer, quail, and pheasant. One can camp either in the parks back-country or at one of the parks developed campgrounds.
