Welcome to Dixon Springs State Park located in the Shawnee Hills of Pope County near Golconda. The park is surrounded by the much larger Shawnee National Forest.
Park History: The Shawnee Tribe called this place, "Kitchemuske-nee-be" for the Great Medicine Waters." One of the better known Native American trails, the "Grand Trace" trail ran near this park and is present day Route 145 which is considered to be one of the state's most scenic routes running all the way down to the Shawnee National Forest. The springs themselves are named after one of the region's first white settlers, William Dixon. Throughout the 19th century many people flocked to the springs to take advantage of the mineral water. People came by steamboat from as far away as Evansville, Indiana and Paducah, Kentucky to enjoy the spa resort.
Flora and Fauna: Dixon Springs State Park is home to numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the parks plants include cypress, oaks, walnuts, sycamores, and maples. Some of the wild animals include squirrels, rabbits, deer, foxes, and others. Please treat their home with great respect.
