When the land formally known as the Henry County Conservation Area was turned into a state park, many local residents wrote to local newspapers with name suggestions. The two most popular suggestions were to name the park after State Senator Frank Johnson, who had worked so hard on the parks behalf, and after the Sauk tribe who roamed the land before the arrival of European Settlers. It was decided to name the park after both Senator Johnson and the Sauk tribe. Millions of years ago the park was the seabed of a vast shallow sea and more recently the landscape was carved out by the Wisconsinian Glacier. It borders Great Willow Swamp which covers much of the low-lying terrain between the Mississippi, Rock, and Green Rivers. It is said that one of the most varied and concentrated populations of wildlife on the continent once inhabited the area. Today the park provides habitat for species such as deer, raccoons, squirrels, and possums. It offers various recreational opportunities including over 4 miles of trails and a 58 acre lake. It also features a historic and large barn known as "Ryan's Round Barn" which was built in 1910. Come on out and enjoy Johnson-Sauk Trail!

70 of the campsites have electrical hookups. To contact the office please call 309-853-2425.
