Shawnee National Forest
Welcome to Illinois's only National Forest, the Shawnee National Forest, an oak and hickory oasis sprawled across the southern part of the state.
Forest History: In about 1930 the citizens of southern Illinois began to notice that the region commonly known as Little Egypt or Little Ozarks was suited for reforestation and began to petition the U.S. Forest Service to establish a National Forest in this part of the state. Their wish was finally granted in 1933.
Flora and Fauna: Shawnee National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the boundaries include oaks, hickories, dogwoods. Some of the more than 500 wild animals who call this place home include deer, foxes, squirrels, raccoons, turtles, hawks, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Shawnee National Forest boasts rock climbing at Jackson Falls, many miles of multipurpose trails including the 160 mile River to River Trail, numerous campgrounds, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
