Welcome to Winfield Mounds Forest Preserve, an oasis of savannas, forests, and prairies located in Winfield, Illinois on the banks of the West Branch of the DuPage River. Forest History: Winfield Mounds Forest Preserve is named for three Native American mounds that are located inside the preserve boundaries. These mounds are the only pre-historic burial site located in DuPage County but in the 1920s they were exploited by vandals, the University of Chicago, and Wheaton College. It is said that nothing remains inside them.
Wildlife: Winfield Mounds Forest Preserve helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, hawks, and owls. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this preserve boasts a limestone trail, a river stocked with bluegill, sunfish, and carp, historic Native American mounds, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
