Welcome to the largest Park in the Elkhart County system, River Preserve County Park located in Goshen, Indiana on the banks of the Elkhart River.
Park History: Long before the arrival of the first European settlers Native Americans roamed this land for many thousands of years. It was near here that Chief Nyananseya (translates to five metals) of the Potowatomi tribe established his village. The chief had the vision of his people finding a way to coexist with the pioneer settlers through large scale farming. Sadly, in 1812 and 1813 U.S. Forces including Lt. John Jackson destroyed his village and his dream went down the drain. Jackson fell in love with the lands beauty and returned in 1829 to build himself a cabin.
In the 1830s more settlers arrived including the Wyland Brothers from Ohio who purchased 640 acres to build a mill race and saw mill. The "Wyland Mills" were very successful and the brothers expanded their operations and built two more mills. In 1860 Johnathan Wyland was widowed and he sold the mills to Frederick Bainter who later sold it to William Redden in 1898. In 1923 the Mill finally went out of business and the land was sold to the Interstate Public Service Company. The company built the Baintertown Hydroelectric Plant which ran until 1969 after going through several owners. In 1970, the Northern Indiana Public Service Company donated the land to Elkhart County and River Preserve County Park was established.
Wildlife: This park's wetlands help to protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. This park has been ranked in the top 80 wildlife viewing places in Indiana.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts nature trails, a canoe launch, and much more. Come on out and explore.
