Welcome to Grand Kakakee Marsh Park located on the banks of the Kankakee River near Hebron, Indiana.
Park History: This beautiful marsh once covered over half a million arces in this region. Long before the arrival of the first European settlers the land in and around what is now Grand Kankakee Marsh Park was inhabited by the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The first white settlers to arrive in this region came in 1834 and by the year 1838 all of the local members of the tribe were rounded up and sent west. After the great Chicago fire of 1871 many of the trees on this land were harvested for their timber in order to help rebuild the city.
The first parcels of land to be purchased for Grand Kankakee Marsh Park were made with the assistance of the Nature Conservancy and the Land and Water Conservation Fund in 1977. The frist 872 acres were purchased for $425K and additional purchases have brought the park to it's present size of 2,069 acres. In 1991 a generous quarter million dollar grant from the Dingle/Johnson Funds went towards construction of the park's boat ramp and fishing pier. Today this park helps contain the seasonal floodwaters of the Kankakee River.
Wildlife: Grand Kankakee Marsh helps protect the home of numerous wild animals including deer, turtles, and ducks. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Grand Kankakee Marsh boasts a fishing pier (Indiana State Fishing license is required), multipurpose trails, a picnic area with grills, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
