Quivira National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, a wetland oasis located on the plains of central Kansas near Stafford.
Refuge History: Quivira National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1955 in order to protect habitat for birds migrating up and down the Central Flyway. Prior to it's establishment much of the land belonged to various hunting clubs. The name "Quivira" is an old Native American term believed to mean "raccoons eyes" in reference to tattoos that explorer Coronado saw on the faces of the natives in his 16th century expedition in search of "The Seven Cities of Cibola."
Wildlife: Quivira National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the home of numerous wild critters including blue herons, ducks, wild turkeys, deer, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts the Migrants Mile walking trail and several bodies of water for fishing. Come on out and have a blast!
