Welcome to Monocacy National Battlefield located in Frederick, Maryland. It was on this site on July 9, 1864 that the Civil War "Battle that saved Washington DC (AKA Battle of Monocacy)" occurred. The Confederate Army, under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee, had made plans to capture DC but the Union Army with the help of Major General Lew Wallace and 3,200 men faced them here and bought the Union Army some time to send more of their people to guard the nation's capitol.
Trails: Monocacy National Battlefield has six trails where you can enjoy the scenery and even learn a little history. The Junction Trail is 1 mile long and is considered easy. The Best Farm Trail is 1.5 miles long and is also considered to be easy. The Ford Loop Trail is 1.6 miles long and is also considered to be easy. The Brooks Hill Loop Trail is 1.9 miles long and is considered to be difficult. The Thomas Farm Loop Trail is 1.5 miles long and is considered to be easy. The Middle Ford Ferry Loop Trail is a quarter mile long and is considered to be moderately challenging. And finalliy there is the Gambrill Mill Trail which is a half mile long and is easy.
Wildlife: This park helps protect a habitat of old farmland, grassland, and forest that protect the home of many wild animals. These animals include American bullfrogs, Eastern American Toads, Eastern Box Turtles, raccoons, white tailed deer, hawks, ducks, bald eagles, and many others. Please treat their home with respect when visiting.
