Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land
Welcome to the Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land, consisting of over 12,000 acres of forested wilderness along the Maine coast along the Bay of Fundy. This is a popular birdwatchers destination and over 200 species of bird have been sighted here. The windy, cool, and damp weather conditions make this land more favorable to species of the Alpine terrain such as the Hooker's Iris, baked appleberry, and bird's eye primrose. Offshore, visitors have sighted marine animals such as seals, porpoises, and whales including humpbacks, mikes, northern rights, and finbacks.
Park History: This park has a unique geological history. The park's volcanic bedrock dates back to the Silurian Age over 400 million years ago and the plateau was carved out by glacial activity during the Wisconsinan ice age rougly 12,000 years ago. Archeologists have unearthed tools that were used by Native Americans dating back several centuries and the first European explorers arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The State of Maine began to acquire the land in 1989 with money from the conservation fund and in 1997 the preserve quintupled in size when The Conservation Fund along with the Richard King Mellon Foundation and Maine Coast Heritage Trust generously donated nearly 9,500 acres. Today the park provides for numerous recreational activities and boasts dozens of miles of trails. Come on out and have a blast!
