Rocky Lake Public Reserved Land
Welcome to the Rocky Lake Public Reserved Land located in Washington County in Eastern Maine near the Canadian border. This preserve boasts over four miles of the East Machias River which is a popular destination for paddlers and a breeding ground for the Atlantic Salmon. The preserves wetlands, forests, and three lakes (Second Lake, Patrick Lake, and Rocky Lake) attract many canoeists and anglers each year. There are two boat launches and numerous campsites in the preserve.
Wildlife: Some of the fish in the preserve's lake include chain pickerel, American Eel, pumpkinseed sunfish, small mouth bass, white and yellow pirch, and brook trout. Some of the preseves other wild critters include bald eagles, bears, moose, deer, and rabbits. Preserve History: The State of Maine purchased this land from the St. Regis Paper Company and International Paper Company in 1977 with additional tracts purchased in 1984 and 2004. The region has long been used for timber harvesting in the 19th and 20th centuries and the land has also been shaped by fires and insect infestations including the Spruce Budworm. Many of the surrounding lands are managed by the State of Maine and are used for sustainable timber harvesting today. Come on out and explore!
