Huron National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to the oldest National Wildlife Refuge in the Midwestern United States, the Huron National Wildlife Refuge, an island oasis on Lake Superior in Michigan.
Refuge History: The Huron National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1905 in order to provide safe-haven for migratory birds. On West Huron Island stands a lighthouse that was built in 1868 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Flora and Fauna: The Huron National Wildlife Refuge helps protect the habitat of numerous plants and animals. Some of the plants that grow on the islands include red pines, white birches, and lichens. Some of the animals that call this place home include bald eagles and gulls. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts many great viewing opportunities from West Huron Island. Come on out and enjoy the scenery.
