Seney National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Seney National Wildlife Refuge located on the majestic upper peninsula of Michigan.
Refuge History: Over 100 years ago the landscape of the upper peninsula bared many scars from logging and forest fires. First, the loggers harvested the pine forests but when those were depleted they began to harvest the northern hardwood and swamp conifer forests. Once the forests were cleared the lumber companies started fires in order to clear the debris. Unfortunately the fires burned many of the seeds that would have given birth to a new forest.
When the fires were extinguished, a land development company dug miles of drainage ditches and sold the drained acreage using promises of agricultural productivity. The buyers of the land, soon discovered that they were scammed and they abandoned their farms, leaving the land's ownership in the hands of the state. In 1934 the State of Michigan recommended to the U.S. Government that the Seney region should be protected. Uncle Sam accepted the proposal and Seney National Wildlife Refuge was established. To this day, many of the scars from the timber days are still being healed.
Wildlife: The bogs, upland meadows, marches, and coniferous and northern hardwood forests of the Seney National Wildlife Refuge protect the home of numerous wild critters including bears, deer, beavers, otters, bald eagles, ospreys, loons, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this refuge boasts over 50 miles of backcountry roads, seasonal fishing opportunities, and so much more. Come on out and explore.
