Big Bog State Recreation Area
Welcome to Big Bog State Recreation Area!
Park History: Many have called this place Minnesota's last true wilderness. This is the site of the largest peat bog in the lower 48 states with an area of 500 square miles. The bog boasts a mile long boardwalk that enables visitors to venture into the bog and get a look at the unique species of plants and animals including some listed as threatened or endangered. Some of the plants in this bog served the medicinal needs of the Ojibwe tribe. In the 1990's the number of walleyes in Upper Red Lake began to decline and the local economy was devastated. Big Big State Recreation Area was created in order to create a sustainable tourist attraction and the state suspended walleye fishing in order to allow the species to recover. In 2006, the state once again allowed for walleye fishing on Upper Red Lake.
Wildlife: The diverse boreal hardwood and conifer forests of Big Bog State Recreation Area help provide habitat for numerous wild critters including black bears, deer, moose, gray wolves, foxes, bobcats, and over 300 species of birds. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of this outdoors this park boasts over five miles of hiking trails, a swimming beach, and dozens of campsites. Come on out and have a blast!
