Welcome to Wild River State Park located on the banks of the St. Croix River near Center City, Minnesota.
Park History: Over a million years ago, glaciers up to a mile in thickness covered much of this region. About 10,000 years ago these glaciers began to melt helping to carve out the landscape and create many of the region's lakes. About 6,000 years ago, the first human inhabitants of this region, the Dakota and Ojibwe arrived. These two tribes ruled the land for thousands of years. In 1847, white settlers began coming to the region and established Connor's Goose Creek Post and Samuel's Fur Post. In 1849, Minnesota became a territory and a military road was constructed through what is now Wild River State Park. The local towns of Sunrise and Amador were founded in the 1850's and the logging boom led to the construction of Nevers Dam in 1890 which operated until 1912. Wild River State Park was established to help protect the region's natural and cultural resources as well as to open up the St. Croix River to recreation. The St. Croix River, was one of the original eight rivers Congress protected under the Wild and Scenic River's Act of 1968 and this is how the park got it's name. The Northern States Power Company generously donated nearly 5,000 of the parks 6,803 acres.
Wildlife: The area that is Wild River State Park is part of a transition zone of hardwood forest, pine forest, and oak savanna and helps protect the habitat of numerous wild critters. Some of the park's animals include otters, deer, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, beavers, hawks, owls, eagles, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts many miles of multipurpose trails and nearly 100 campsites. Come on out and explore!
