Red River State Recreation Area
Welcome to Red River State Recreation Area located near the Minnesota/North Dakota State Line in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.
Park History: This is one of the newer parks in the Minnesota State Park System. In 1997, a severe flood devastated the communities of East Grand Forks Minnesota and Grand Forks North Dakota causing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to redraw the floodplains and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to use eminent domain to purchase and level over 500 buildings. The flood damage was estimated to be in the neighborhood of between $1 billion and $1.5 billion. Today, what was once the site of many homes and other buildings is now part of a greenway over 1,200 acres in size.
Wildlife: This park helps protect the habitat of numerous wild critters including otters, squirrels, deer, raccoons, herons, hawks, eagles, owls, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts over 7 miles of trails and 94 campsites. Come on out and have a blast!
