Welcome to St. Croix State Park, a sprawling preserve located near the Minnesota/Wisconsin State Line in Hinckley, Minnesota.
Park History: The landscape in and around St. Croix State Park was carved out by glacial retreat at the end of the last ice age. The river itself has served as an important trade route for many centuries for both Native Americans and European settlers. First the dominant trade was fir, but by the mid-19th century the logger had become the king of the region and shipped many logs down the river. In 1915, other parts of the United States had become big logging country and many of the local farmers struggled to make a living off of the poor soil. In 1934, the State of Minnesota purchased 18,000 acres of farmland to establish the St. Croix Recreational Demonstration Area in 1935. The National Park Service, Civilian Conservation Corps, and Works Progress Administration worked to transform the farmland into roads, campgrounds, and group camps. Many of the structures still stand today and are protected under the National Register of Historic Sites.
Wildlife: This large State Park helps protect the habitat of numerous wild critters including black bears, deer, squirrels, foxes, raccoons, coyotes, bobcats, and numerous birds of prey. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts, a National Scenic River, many miles of multipurpose trails, a swimming beach, volleyball nets, and over 200 campsites (81 with electricity). Come on out and explore!
