Welcome to Blue Mounds State Park located near Luverne, Minnesota. Blue Mounds state park is unique for it's bison roaming the plains. The area was once a Sioux hunting ground. One of the parks more notable geological features is a rock outcrop of quartzite known as "The Mound."
Park History: The region's Sioux quartzite rock was formed on the bottom of an ancient inland sea. The ancient seabed deposited large amounts of sand and through time the water pressure turned it into sandstone. After more time passed, chemical reactions and the planets heat turned the sandstone into a very hard quartzite rock. Over the last two million years glacial retreat helped to carve out the region's landscape and deposited sand and gravel 300 feet deep. Some of the region's first humans, members of the Plains tribes, hunted the land's game which included bison. The park's famous Mound, appeared blue to many settlers traveling west in the mid-19th century and this is how the park got it's name.
In 1934, citizens of Rock County struggling through the hardships of the Great Depression, petitioned the Federal Government for a Works Project Administration project in the region. Their wish was granted, and in 1937 two dams were built on Mounds Creek forming the park's lakes. In the 1950's thousands of trees were planted along the shores of the lakes. In 1961, the park's name was changed from Blue Mounds Recreation Area to Blue Mounds State Park. Also at that time, three bison from Nebraska were introduced into the park and today there are more than 100 bison.
Flora and Fauna: Blue Mounds State Park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the boundaries include wildflowers and the prickly pear cactus.
