Welcome to William O'Brien State Park located on the banks of the St. Croix River near Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota.
Park History: Millions of years ago, this land was covered by inland seas which helped form sandstone outcrops. More recently, retreating glaciers helped to carve out the sandstone and create the area's valleys. For many centuries, the Dakota and Ojibwe tribes ruled this land and took advantage of the plants and animals for both food and clothing. In the 17th century, European's came into the region to engage in fur trading. In the mid-19th century, the timber boom started and logging mills were established on the banks of the St. Croix River. One logger by the name of William O'Brien, purchased much of the land from the lumber companies and left it to his daughter when he passed. In memory of her father, his daughter donated 180 acres to the State of Minnesota in 1947 and William O'Brien State Park was established. Over the years, additional acreage was added to bring the park to it's present size of 1,653 acres.
Flora and Fauna: This park helps protect the habitat of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the park's plants include oaks, hickories, pines, and numerous wildflowers. Some of the park's animals include beavers, minks, woodchucks, raccoons, foxes, deer, orioles, woodpeckers, bluebirds, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
