Welcome to Flandrau State Park, a vast expanse of marshes, woodlands, and grasslands located on the banks of the Big Cottonwood River near New Ulm, Minnesota.
Park History: The land that is now Flandrau State Park was once the site of a Work Projects Administration (WPA) camp in the 1930's and 1940's. During WWII the site served as a POW camp for German soldiers. The river itself was once dammed up by high waters and continued damage of the dam led to it's removal in 1995. On March 15, 1945, the Minnesota State Legislature renamed the site from Cottonwood State Park to Flandrau State Park in honor of Charles Flandrau, a man who helped write the State Constitution, served on the State Supreme Court, and fought in the U.S. Dakota Conflict of 1862. The park's landscapes consist of valleys carved out during the end of the last ice age and bedrock deposited from ancient seabeds.
Flora and Fauna: Flandrau State Park's marshes and forests help protect habitat for numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the park's plants include cottonwoods, oaks, and other deciduous trees. Some of the park's animals include deer, raccoons, and numerous bird species. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts over eight miles of trails, a playground, a volleyball court, a picnic area, and nearly 100 campsites (including 34 with electricity). Come on out and have a blast!
