Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge located in northern Minnesota.
Refuge History: Long before the arrival of the first European settlers this land was ruled by the Native Americans including the Dakota and more recently the Ojibwe. Both tribes saw the land as valuable hunting and fishing grounds. In the late 19th and early 20th century many timber harvests took place on this land and in 1938 Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge was established in order to protect the land's wildlife habitats. It took nearly 30 years for all land acquisitions to be completed and these acquisitions were funded by the Duck Stamp sold by the U.S. Postal Service.
Flora and Fauna: The forests, wetlands, and tallgrass prairies of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge help protect the home of numerous plant and animal species. Some of the plants that grow inside the refuge boundaries include aspens, pines, red oaks, white oaks, and sugar maples. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include swans, hawks, moose, porcupines, otters, and beavers. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Tamarac boasts miles of multipurpose trails, canoeing and kayaking opportunities, and much more. Come on out and explore
