Welcome to Big Stone Lake State Park located on the Minnesota/South Dakota State Line near Ortonville. This 26 mile long lake is a popular angler's destination.
Park History: The landscape in and around Big Stone Lake State Park was carved out by the melt-waters of glacial lake Agassiz thousands of years ago. In 1923, State Auditor Ray Chase criticized the Minnesota State Park system of having a geographical imbalance and argued that there were too few parks in the southern part of the state. It wasn't until nearly 40 years later that local businessmen of Ortonville who were concerned over lakeshore development, helped push the State Legislature to establish Big Stone Lake State Park.

Some of the plants that grow inside the park boundaries include cottonwoods, ashes, and maples. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include raccoons, deer, squirrels, mourning doves, wrens, and wild turkeys. Please treat their home with respect.
