Welcome to Maplewood State Park located in the hill country east of Red River Valley near Pelican Rapids.
Park History: The park's hills, which range up to 1,600 feet in elevation, are part of the Alexandria Moraine carved out during the last ice age. Human settlement in this region dates back over 6,000 years and artifacts of both the prairie and woodland cultures have been discovered here. In the late 19th century, European settlers arrived and established local towns including Lida and Maplewood. In 1923, a member of the State Legislature had proposed making this piece of land into a State Park. That dream finally became reality in 1963.
Flora and Fauna: Maplewood State Park helps protect the habitat for numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the park's plants include hepaticas, bloodroots, wild onions, prairie roses, milkweeds, and many others. Some of the park's animals include over 150 bird species and 50 mammal species including rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, deer, swallows, kingbirds, warblers, and many others.
