Park History: From about 500-200 million years ago this land was part of an ancient seabed that covered much of North America. The seabed helped to form layers of shale, limestone, and sandstone and over time caves were formed through these water soluble rocks situated at an elevation of 1,300 feet above sea level today.
In 1853, the town of Forestville was established at what is now the center of the park. By 1858, Forestville had a population of over 100 people, a grist mill, two general stores, two hotels, a brickyard, and several mechanics. In 1868, the region's first railroad was built and Forestville suffered as a result. By 1890 the entire town of 50 people was turned into an operating farm owned by one of the founder's sons, Thomas J. Meighen. Meighen had set up a barter trade system in which he would provide the 50 people housing and general store credits in exchange for their services.
Flora and Fauna: The deciduous forest and tallgrass prairie blufflands that are Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park help protect the home of numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the park's plants include oaks, pines, firs, maples, and others. Some of the park's animals include deer, raccoons, minks, beavers, squirrels, foxes, coyotes, and over 175 bird species. Please treat their home with respect.
