Welcome to Banning State Park located just off of Interstate 35 near Sandstone, Minnesota.
Park History: In the late 19th century, this region was well known for it's sandstone quarries. The rock's color and strength made it a very popular building material. In 1894, the Hinckley Forest fire swept through the region causing massive damage to business and the landscape.
Business was hurt, but not ruined, and thus continued in operation after the fire and in 1896 a local village was established nearby and named for William L. Banning, President of the St. Paul and Duluth Railroad. In 1905 the village had reached a population of 300 people and steel helped put the local quarries out of business. Forest fires continued to be a problem in the region and by 1912, Banning was virtually a ghost town, with only weathered ruins remaining today. In 1963, the state legislature established banning State Park and extensions were made in 1971 and 1986.
Flora and Fauna: Banning State Park helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the park's boundaries include pines, aspens, conifers, and many others. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include deer, black bears, coyotes, foxes, squirrels and over 184 species of birds. Please treat their home with respect.
