Welcome to Tettegouche State Park located near Silver Bay Minnesota.
Park History: The park's rocky cliffs and pebble beaches were formed by volcanic activity over 1.1 billion years ago and were carved out more recently by retreating glaciers. In the late 19th century, the Alger-Smith Lumber Company set up camp in the region and named it Nipisquit, a tribal term from the logger's homeland of New Brunswick. By 1910, most of the Norway and White Pine had fallen to the logger's ax and the camp and surrounding lands were sold to the "Tettegouche Club," a business group from Duluth who turned the land into a fishing retreat. One of the club members, Clement Quinn, bought the shares of all the other club members and held onto the land and protected it for the next half century. In 1971, Quinn sold the land to the deLaittres family who worked with the Nature Conservancy to help make the land into a State Park. That dream was made into a reality in 1979. Today over 400,000 visitors come to the park each year to see the cliffs and overlooks at Shovel Point and the 60 foot High Falls of the Baptism River.
Wildlife: The northern hardwood forests, lakes and rivers of Tettegouche State Park help protect habitat for numerous wild critters including beavers, squirrels, deer, moose, coyotes, black bears, and many others. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors this park boasts many miles of multipurpose trails, areas for rock climbing, four picnic areas, and 28 (22 of which have electricity) campsites. Come on out and explore.
