Superior National Forest
Welcome to the Superior National Forest located in northern Minnesota along the Canadian border.
Forest History: The first people to inhabit the region that is now the Superior National Forest arrived over 11,000 years ago when the last glaciers of the ice age finally receded. There are three archeological periods covering the early human history of northern Minnesota, the Paleo Indian Period, the Archaic Period, and the Woodland Period. Some of the tribes of these periods included the Sioux, Assiniboine, Ojibwe, and Cree tribes. Some of the first known Europeans to arrive in the region were French fur traders who arrived in the 17th century. Eventually the smallpox virus took a devastating toll on the local tribes. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the landscapes of northern Minnesota began to change rapidly when many loggers, farmers, and miners began to arrive.
Flora and Fauna: Superior National Forest helps protect the home of numerous plant and animals species. Some of the plants that grow inside the forest boundaries include pines, firs, aspens, and spruce. Some of the wild animals who call this place home include wolves, badgers, beavers, otters, black bears, moose, lynx, and bald eagles. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Superior National Forest boasts over 2,000 miles of streams, 2,000 lakes, the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area, and so much more. Come on out and explore!
