Welcome to Interstate State Park located on the banks of the beautiful St. Croix River on the Minnesota/Wisconsin State Line near Taylor's Falls.
Park History: Roughly 1.1 billion years ago, massive earthquakes shook the region from Taylor's Falls to Lake Superior and sparked over ten different lava flows. The hardened basalt from the lava flow helped to form the rapids and the riverbed of the St. Croix River. From the time of 530 million years ago to 70 million years ago advancing and retreating seas helped to form today's bedrock and left behind fossils from various ancient creatures. The ancient St. Croix Valley was formed by retreating seas over 70 million years ago but the more recent valley was carved out by the meltwaters of Glacial Lake Duluth.
In the 19th century, mining companies had a growing interest in the land and this prompted concerned citizens in both Wisconsin and Minnesota to campaign for the protection of the land. On the Minnesota side, Interstate State Park was established in 1895. On the Wisconsin side, Interstate State Park was established in 1900. There are only a few parks of this kind in the United States and this is one of them.
Flora and Fauna: The park's floodplains and forests help protect the habitat of numerous species of plants and animals. Some of the park's plants include oaks, maples, pines, and others. Some of the park's animals include raccoons, squirrels, skunks, deer, and many bird species. Please treat their home with respect.
For the lover of the outdoors Interstate State Park boasts over four miles of walking trails, cliffs for climbing, a volleyball court, and two picnic shelters. Come on out and explore!
